The Lord's Call to His Church
The book of Revelation is not an easy book of the Bible to understand. It is what is called apocalyptic literature and is full of imagery and mystery. Over the centuries it has been variously used and misused and even today there are often fanciful interpretations around. Sometimes it goes unread because it can seem so difficult or the language seems too far from us. However, it remains God's word to us and it is possible to understand and apply it for today's society. Indeed in this year of 2012, with many so-called prophecies around about the end of the world and the Hollywood film 2012 already made, it is timely to see what this mysterious book has to say.
During the year we will consider different aspects of the Revelation of St John. We begin with a study of the letters to the seven churches which offer a fairly straight forward entry to the book as a whole. It also enables us to hear Jesus' word to us, his church, as we lead up to Easter and our Annual Church Meeting. We will come back later in the year to some of the more complex apocalyptic language about beasts and marks and seals.
The letters written to the seven churches of Asia are personal, practical and pastoral. They are also challenging and uncompromising in the call for us to listen to Jesus the Lord of His Church. Will we do so?
